2016 Flood disaster in the Island of Dominican Republic
WHILE INCREASED TO 30 THOUSAND REFUGEES
Relief agencies rescued 70 people who were at risk from flooding in the Quebrada Amarilla community of the Las Gordas Municipal District in María trinidad Sánchez.
Meanwhile, displaced people increased to 30 thousand, of which 1,130 are in official shelters, and 91 communities are incommunicado for the floods recorded in the last two days.
According to the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), nine bridges are affected by the flooding of rivers and 5,846 affected homes, 25 destroyed.
Due to continued downpours, the COE keeps alert for 25 provinces, six in red, eight yellow and eleven in green.
In red alert are Montecristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, Maria Trinidad Sánchez, Santiago and Valverde.
In yellow are Duarte, (especially the Lower Yuna), San Juan de La Maguana, Samaná, Sánchez Ramírez, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Altagracia and San Cristóbal.
On the green alert are La Vega, Hermanas Mirabal, Monseñor Nouel, Dajabón, La Romana La Altagracia, Barahona, San José de Ocoa, Gran Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís and Monte Plata.
The north part of the country is flooded
While the National Meteorological Office (ONAMET) reported that a frontal system located on the north coast of the country, will continue to generate downpours and gust of wind to villages located in the north, northeast, northwest, east, southeast and the Cordillera Central.
Bridge collapses in Puerto Plata due to overflow of river Bajabonico
THE LAST BULLETIN OF THE COE INDICATED THAT PUERTO PLATA IS IN RED ALERT, TOGETHER WITH ESPAILLAT, MARÍA TRINIDAD SÁNCHEZ AND SANTIAGO
The strong current of the river Bajabonico, in the municipality Luperón, caused the collapse of a bridge of the community, leaving, in turn, to several incommunicado localities.
In addition, Imbert municipality reported that floods in the Bajabonico and Obispo rivers caused more than 10 houses to collapse, authorities said.
The sectors of Maranatha, Villa Bethania, Sosúa Abajo and Bella Vista in the municipality of Sosúa were again flooded by the flood of rivers and canyons of that area.
The latest bulletin of the Center for Emergency Operations (COE), indicated that Puerto Plata is on a red alert, next to the provinces Espaillat, Maria Trinidad Sánchez and Santiago.
